Exploring Playa Flamenca Part 2 : Birdwatching

In Part 2 of "Exploring Playa Flamenca" we take a look at what is on offer for birdwatching enthusiasts along the picturesque coastline of Playa Flamenca.

The coastal walking paths around Playa Flamenca and further afield along the coast of Costa Blanca offer a diverse range of habitats, making it an ideal location for birdwatching. Bird enthusiasts can expect to encounter various species, from those inhabiting the cliffs to those near the shore. From vibrant flamingos wading in shallow lagoons to majestic raptors soaring overhead, the diverse habitats of the area provide a sanctuary for a rich tapestry of birdlife.

Here are some of the types of birds you might see during your walks :

Flamingos

Look for these majestic birds in shallow lagoons, salt marshes, and coastal wetlands. Areas such as the Salinas de Torrevieja and the nearby Laguna Rosa are prime spots for spotting flamingos as well as the salt pans of Santa Pola.

Birds of Prey

Raptors are often seen soaring high above coastal cliffs, scrubland areas, and open countryside. They may perch on elevated perches such as trees, utility poles, or rock formations, scanning the landscape for prey.

Herons and Egrets

These elegant waders can be seen along the water's edge, patiently waiting to catch fish or other small prey. Night Herons have also been spotted in San Pedro del Pinatar.

Shorebirds

Playa Flamenca's sandy shores and the salt pans of San Pedro del Pinatar attract a variety of shorebirds, including Sandpipers, Plovers, and Turnstones. These small, agile birds can be observed foraging for food along the water's edge.

Gulls

Several species of gulls, such as the Yellow-legged Gull and the Audouin's Gull, can be found along the coastline of Playa Flamenca. San Pedro del Pinatar Salinas is also a big attraction for waders, Avocets and slender billed gulls.

Seabirds

Offshore islands and rocky outcrops provide nesting sites for seabirds such as Cormorants, Shags, and Yellow-legged Gulls. These birds can often be seen perched on cliffs or diving into the sea in search of fish.

These are just a few examples of the avian diversity that awaits birdwatchers on the coastal walks of Playa Flamenca. With its varied habitats and strategic location along migratory routes, this region offers endless opportunities for birdwatching enthusiasts to observe and appreciate the beauty of nature's winged wonders.

Please feel free to send us any photographs from your own birdwatching walks or useful places for sightings and we will share them on our blog.
